Some history concerning the
Houston Park Church of Christ
The church of Christ in
Selma area dates back to the late 19th century. In those days, Brother
Charlie Landers of Highland Home, Alabama preached the gospel of Christ in
evangelistic meetings in northern Dallas County. As the result of these
efforts, several souls became New Tes
tament Christians. Early in the 20th
century, some of these Christians began meeting with other New Testament
Christians who had been worshiping on the Lord's Day in the home of
brother F. J. Turner Sr. on Washington Street in Selma. This group increased in
strength until, in 1923, a meetinghouse located on Selma
Avenue
was purchased from the Cumberland Presbyterians. At this location, the
Selma Avenue Church of Christ prospered, and from time to time the facilities
were enlarged. In 1966, the present facility (pictured above) was built on
land
located at 2 Crescent Hill Drive.
Through the years the
congregation has been served by an illustrious array of elders, deacons, and
ministers. Some of the most highly acclaimed gospel preachers in the
brotherhood
are among those who have conducted evangelistic meetings
at Houston Park. A display case located in the church parlor contains memorabilia
from the early years of the congregation, highlighting the rich heritage of the
cause of Christ in Selma. Visitors are welcome to stop by and view these
items.
In the new millennium, the Houston Park church continues to exist by the
blessing of God for the purpose of serving their fellowman by encouraging all to
come to Christ and be saved in Him, to live together in fellowship as New
Testament Christians, and to worship God in spirit and in truth.
