Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Mr. McLemore, what is the battle of Armageddon all about?
Answer: Armageddon is mentioned in Revelation 16:16 (see verses 12-12). The name is from the Aramaic and is thought to mean “the hill of Megiddo.” At this location, the fate of the nation of Israel was often decided by great victories and defeats. The book of Revelation portrays a conflict between the church and the Roman Empire, and John’s visions depict the cosmic conflict between good and evil, Christ and Satan, which the earthly conflict reflects. The fact that Rome and her enemies (providential agents of Christ’s judgment upon the persecuting power) gathered at this place symbolizes the decisiveness of the conflict. The defeat of Rome would be the triumph of good and the vindication of God’s people. Our daily struggle against evil as we face trials and temptations contains within it the essence of Armageddon. Our response to those temptations and trials is decisive. We may fight with confidence, because God, Christ, and good will always and ultimately prevail.
