Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Mr. McLemore, My first husband divorced me. I don't remember the "civil grounds," but it was because he'd been having an affair with someone else for 2 ½ years and he wanted to be with her. Was I free to scripturally remarry?
Answer: The passages pertinent to your question are Matthew 5:32; 19:9; Mark 10:11; Luke 16:18; 1 Corinthians 7:10, 11. Please read and study these carefully. According to the teaching of our Lord, a sexually faithful marriage partner whose spouse commits fornication is free to remarry after divorce. In 1 Corinthians 7:10, 11, Paul addresses the case of persons who divorce when there is no fornication involved, and his teaching is "...remain unmarried or else be reconciled..." The teaching of Jesus and Paul on this subject indicates that sexual immorality (fornication) severs the marriage bond (a covenant between husband and wife to be exclusive sexual partners for life). According to these teachings, and according to the information you provided, you were free to remarry.
