Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question:
Mr. McLemore, What does it mean to accept Jesus and let him be one’s personal savior?Answer:
No person in the New Testament was ever instructed to fulfill the action that is described in your inquiry. Whenever they sought salvation, they were instructed to believe on Jesus, confess faith in him, and be baptized into him (Acts 16:30-34; Romans 10:9; Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:26, 27) in order to be saved. I think what your question affirms is the New Testament teaching that "redemption is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith" (Romans 3:25). In other words, Christ has provided salvation for all, but all must receive it individually through obedient faith. As in the case of all religious matters, the individual response that is required would be more accurately conveyed by using the language of the Scripture itself. In this way many of the misunderstandings which divide those who claim to believe in Jesus could be avoided (Cf. 1 Corinthians 1:10).
