Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: Dear Sir: Don’t you think that we need to put Christ back into Christmas?

Answer: We need for Christ to be in every aspect of our daily lives in all seasons of the year. We especially need to put him back into the first day of the week, which is the Lord’s Day, the day on which he ordained that his people should commune with him around his table each week. However, neither Jesus, nor his disciples, nor any inspired person has made a single statement regarding Christmas. As a religious observance, Christmas is entirely a human tradition ordained by men without any divine authority. Did Christ ever desire to be in Christmas in the first place? If the question means, “Should people act more like Christ during the enjoyment of the traditional festivities of this season?” then, I would say that we need to put Christ back into Christmas! But if it means, “Should everybody once more think of Christmas as a divinely ordained religious holiday?” then all who hold the Bible to be the only divine religious authority would have to answer in the negative.
