Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Dear sir, if a person is saved, is it possible for that person to be lost? Is it possible for a Christian to have assurance?
Answer: Many people believe the doctrine commonly known as "once saved, always saved." This doctrine is an example of extremism in handling the teaching of the New Testament. The best way to avoid this error is to remember that a relationship with God involves both the divine and the human. In terms of the human, it is a matter of faith. In terms of the divine, it is a matter of God’s omnipotence. There is no power which is able to cause God’s promises of salvation to obedient believers to fail. However, a person who is an obedient believer may cease to be such. Hence, all the warnings against unbelief given to Christians in the New Testament. All of God’s promises of salvation to believers are conditioned upon their continuing to be believers. Please read Hebrews 6:4-6. The persons described have been actual believers who are capable of falling away for good. There is assurance for those Christians who never cease to trust Christ.
