Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Mr. McLemore, Is it God’s will that there be so many denominations of people who claim to follow Christ?
Answer: Denominations exist because of divisions among people who claim to be Christians. The names of the various groups often indicate the belief or practice on which they differ from other groups. The New Testament does not sanction any divisions among the followers of Christ. (Please read 1 Corinthians 1:10ff. and John 17:20, 21). If all who claim to be disciples of Jesus confessed and taught the whole of what the New Testament teaches and nothing but what the New Testament teaches, then there would be no divisions. All would speak the same thing, and there would be no need for any denominations! Denominations exist because of a willingness to elevate an interpretation of what the scriptures teach to the same level as the actual words of the scriptures. All denominations would instantly cease to exist if all agreed to confess and teach what the word of God says instead of what they think it means. (Please read 1 Peter 4:11).
