Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Mr. McLemore, why don’t you people in churches of Christ catch up with the times and use instruments of music in worship?
Answer: Interestingly, your question precisely pinpoints the principle involved in this issue, viz., the times. For you see, instead of being with the times, it is those who use instruments in worship who are behind the times! Jesus Christ inaugurated a new, higher, spiritual form of worship for these last days/the Christian Age (John 4:23, 24). The new and living way which Christ prepared for those who are his enables a spirit to spirit worship which renders material and fleshly things obsolete, superfluous, and inferior. Now, all that is desired, required, and authorized by God in musical worship is the worshiping person. One has within one the only instrument needed, viz., the heart (Ephesians 5:19), with which to accompany one’s singing. To use other instruments is to go back to earlier, more primitive times before Christ (the Old Testament). Let all who claim to follow Christ truly "catch up with the times!"
