Think on These
Things

Question: Sir, are there angels among us, and if so, what do they do?
Answer: The New Testament encourages us to believe that angels are actively involved in the affairs of human beings. They are aware of the affairs of earth (1 Corinthians 4:9), but they are not omniscient (Matthew 24:36; 2 Peter 1:12). They are present when God’s people assemble (Hebrews 12:22; 1 Corinthians 11:10). They are pictured as transporting the dead to the Hadean world (Luke 16:22). They may provide encouragement and other help (Matthew 4:11; Mark 1:13; Luke 22:43), such as protection and deliverance (Matthew 26:53; Acts 12:7-11; Hebrews 1:14). There are evil angels that oppose the people of God (Matthew 25:41; Romans 8:38). While angels spoke to people in New Testament times (Matthew 1, 2; 28:5; Luke 1, 2; Acts 8:26; 10:3ff.; 11:13f.; 27:23f.), it was not to tell them how to be saved (cf. Galatians 1:8). Why angels were visible in New Testament times but are not now, I do not know. They definitely are working “behind the scenes.”
