Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: Dear sir, is it right for preachers to be put on a pedestal as if they were holier than others?

Answer: Your question should be of great interest to all preachers, as it is to me. Surely, it is not the desire of any true servant of Christ to be "put on a pedestal." I often wonder if the preachers who are attempting to practice servant leadership modeled by our Lord and his apostles feel comfortable being addressed by the religious titles that are part and parcel of denominational tradition. I also wonder if those who apply titles to preachers have considered whether there is any authority in the New Testament for the practice. Is it scriptural to address them in any fashion that suggests that they are distinct from other Christians? The word of Jesus seems sufficient to orient all of his disciples on this matter: "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren" (Matthew 23:8). The true ethos and authority of a preacher lie not in titles but in faith, purity and sincerity of life, and holding firm to the sure word as taught.
