Question: Mr. McLemore, Do the spirits of the dead sometimes appear to the living?

Answer: Likely we all have heard someone tell of having experienced what seemed to be the presence a deceased person. It may have been someone dear, a beloved relative, or a friend. In some cases, persons believe they have been visited by Jesus himself. Others have confessed experiencing manifestations which they sense to be evil. While I have not experienced such a phenomenon, I do not know of any information, biblical or non-biblical, that would require us to deny that these folks have experienced what they claim to have experienced. Some claim to have received great comfort from what they have experienced. However, the human senses are not infallible in interpreting what is experienced. More important, any impressions gained from such experiences should be evaluated in light the word of God. The Bible teaches that we should allow nothing of this sort, no matter however impressive, to lead us astray from God’s inspired truth (Galatians 1:6-9; 1 John 4:1).
