Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: Dear Mr. McLemore, a relative of mine recently committed suicide. Should I worry that God will condemn my relative to hell?

Answer: I am very sorry that you and your family have experienced this tragedy in your lives. The death of a loved one under any circumstances is difficult enough. Let me assure you that the Judge of all the earth will do right (Genesis 18:25). He searches and knows all hearts, including the heart of your relative who took his or her own life (Psalm 139). We may be certain that just as he will see to it that all who are guilty will receive their due, he will not hold any responsible for that for which they are not responsible. He is just, fair, and kind. His judgment is according to the truth. While there are exceptions, most people who commit suicide are not responsible for their actions. While they seem to be deliberate in their act, some physical or mental defect has caused them to think they should take their own life. This mitigates against their being held responsible. I hope that these thoughts are helpful to you.
