Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: Mr. McLemore, please comment on the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers.

Answer: The idea is taught in 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6; 5:10; 20:6. Christ, our High Priest, has ". . . appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself . . . [W]e have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain" (Hebrews 9:26; 10:19, 20). This eliminates the need for a special class of people to act as mediators between us and God. In Christ, we can offer our own sacrifices before God (see Romans 12:2; Philippians 2:17; 4:18; 2 Timothy 4:7; Hebrews 13:15, 16, et. al.). Bringing this teaching to the fore was one of the great triumphs of the Reformation. The attempt to perpetuate a priesthood distinct from all believers in Christ is a blatant and blasphemous denial of what Scripture declares was accomplished by our High Priest. It is absolutely unchristian and can only represent an attempt on the part of men to exert illegitimate power over believers.
