Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Preacher, I have found out that a close relative of mine is engaging in immoral behavior. It disgusts me. How should I behave toward this person?
Answer: I would guess that many are facing similar situations. The fact that persons we love do things of which we do not approve or of which we strongly disapprove does not change the fact that we love them. It is perhaps most helpful in such situations to be sure we understand the meaning of the real kind of love we ought to have for others. Christian love (Greek agape) is active goodwill. Active goodwill may be shown toward someone whose behavior is highly displeasing to us. It is exhibited by God and is to be modeled by his children. He is kind to the unthankful and the evil (Luke 6:35; see the context for specifics; cf. Romans 12:30, 31). In such cases as you describe, we can be kind and do good things for them while courteously making it clear to them that we do not condone their immoral behavior. Primarily, we must communicate genuine concern for their well-being. Pray for the Lord’s help in loving such persons as the Lord loved us (Romans 5:6-8).
