Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: "Dear Sir: What is the most basic difference between the church of which you are a member and other churches?"

Answer: The most fundamental difference between the church of Christ and other churches is the approach to divine revelation that results in our existence. Recognizing only the holy scriptures, which are God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21), as possessing divine authority, we proceed to limit our belief, confession, and practice entirely to what is explicitly stated, no more and no less. In this way, we humbly recognize God alone as sovereign and Christ alone as Lord. Viewing the word as the seed (Luke 8:11), we are confident that when this seed is planted in an honest and good heart, what grows is the planting of the Lord whose word the seed is (Isaiah 61:3). Every difference in belief and practice between the church of Christ and other churches comes from the willingness of other churches to add to or take away from what is written word or to allow interpretations or accommodations to what is explicitly stated to have authority with them equal to the written word itself.
