Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: “Sir, Many people today believe Jesus will set up his kingdom here on earth and reign for a thousand years when he comes again. Is this what the Bible teaches?”
Answer: Space prevents our considering this question in detail. Suffice it to say that the Bible nowhere teaches many things commonly assumed about the second coming of Christ. No New Testament passage states Jesus will ever set foot on earth again. The resurrected righteous and the living righteous will meet the coming Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17). No passage indicates that Christ’s reign lasts only a thousand years. Revelation 20:4, 6 states that saints reigned with Christ a thousand years, but there is no indication of how long before the thousand years Christ began his reign or how long after the thousand years he reigned. No passage states that Christ is not now reigning as king over his kingdom. Many passages teach that Christ does reign now and will do so unto the end (1 Corinthians 15:24, 25; Colossians 1:13; Hebrews 1:1-14, et. al.). His kingdom is manifested on earth by his church (Matthew 16:18-19).
