Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Dear Mr. McLemore, I find myself being angry quite often. Can you give some advice for dealing with my anger? Answer: If we are angry at someone else, perhaps it would be well to analyze our anger to see whether it is appropriate. When someone mistreats us or violates our boundaries, it is good for us to be angry and to communicate our anger in a calm and respectful manner (cf. Proverbs 15:1). The objective is to establish boundaries and to try to stop the mistreatment rather than to inflict harm upon the person who has harmed or taken advantage of us (Ephesians 4:26). If we are angry for some other reason, the cause may lie within us, viz., our own insecurity, fear, or pride. It may be that others are not giving us what we desire, think we need, or think we deserve. We would do well to remember that the world does not revolve around us, and that our security and worth is to be found, not in others, but in our own inherent value and in relationship with God and Christ. In such cases, the secret to dealing with anger may be humility, faith, high ideals, and honesty with ourselves.
