Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: Sir, How do we know that the Bible is from God and not just a human book?

Answer: The writers of the Bible claim that what is written therein is from God by divine means, and in particular, by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 13; 14:37; Acts 7:53; Galatians 3:19; Hebrews 2:2; 9:8, et. al.). This is particularly evident in the Old Testament prophets, whose oracles often begin or conclude with an explicit "thus saith the LORD," etc. The most sensible and reasonable approach is to consider whether a purely human explanation for the Bible is adequate to account for the phenomenon that the Bible is. The Bible’s unity and harmony, its prophecies and their fulfillment, its cultural, historical, and geographical accuracy, its insuperable ideas, its unsurpassed honesty in dealing with its characters, its remarkable preservation, and its incomparable impact upon civilization all point beyond the limits of mere human production. Accordingly, it is far more reasonable to believe it is from God.
