Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: “Dear Mr. McLemore, Will the world be destroyed, that is, cease to exist at the end of time?”Answer: The Scripture teaches that “...the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up...the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire!” (2 Peter 3:10, 11). In Romans 8:21, Paul describes how “the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God.” Considering these two passages together suggests that Peter may be speaking figuratively of the purification, refinement, and renewal of the earth rather than its ceasing to exist. Fire often symbolizes refinement and purification. The destiny of the earth has its counterpart in the transformation of our bodies by resurrection. (See 1 Corinthians 15:35-53; Philippians 3:20, 21; Hebrews 12:25-29). This transformation will result in “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13).
