Think on These

Things

Question: Dear Sir, What does it mean to quench the Spirit?

Answer: "The Spirit," of course, refers to the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote, "Do not quench the Spirit" (1Thessalonians 5:19). The language reflects fire as a symbol for the third Person of the Godhead (Acts 2:1-4). The fire emphasizes the effect of the Holy Spirit. Whatever the work of the Holy Spirit is, to resist that work is to quench the Spirit. (It is important to realize that while the Holy Spirit is at work providentially in the lives of people and dwells in every Christian [Romans 8:9], he no longer communicates to the human heart directly as he did when he was inspiring the apostles and writers of Scripture. He communicates God’s will to us through what inspired men wrote, viz., the holy scriptures). Among the things the Spirit does: he brings forth his fruit in our lives, battles with the flesh, sanctifies us, strengthens us, helps our weaknesses, etc. (Galatians 5:16-24; Romans 8:26; Ephesians 3:16; 1 Peter 1:2). Anything we might do to stifle and hinder these activities in our lives would be to "quench the Spirit."
