Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Preacher, How can I distinguish between the
chastening of the Lord and when what happens to me is “just life?”
Answer: Please read Hebrews 12:5-11. It is not possible to
know with certainty. There are times when we think we can see the hand of the
Lord at work in our circumstances, but it is useful always to remember that
there are supernatural forces at work in the world besides God, and they
disguise themselves (cf. 2 Corinthians 11:14). I have found it helpful to adopt
the habit of saying, “Who knows?” (E.g., Esther 4:14, 15). It is safe to be
guided in decisions and belief solely by the scriptures. It is always appropriate
to examine ourselves honestly in light of God’s word. It is not necessary to know if God is
chastening us or if it is “just life” in order grow in the midst of suffering
and difficulties. It is essential to
know and believe in God and Christ in order to become what they are trying to
make of us, but it is not essential to know whether God is the direct cause of
what we are experiencing (cf. Romans 8:28).
