Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: “Preacher, Christmas will soon be here. Why do some of you folks not celebrate
Christmas?”
Answer: There is simply no scriptural authority for observing
a feast in honor of the birth of Christ as a divinely ordained religious
practice. The only feast which the
earliest Christians observed, and that upon the authority of Christ himself and
his apostles, is the Lord’s Supper. It
was observed every first day of the week (the Lord’s Day) for communion with
Christ and to show his death until he comes again. Had Christ desired that his disciples
commemorate his birth (or any other of the events of his life for which humans
have inaugurated commemorations), there was ample opportunity for him to give
instructions. However, he did not do
so. Clearly, what is pro-claimed in the
Lord’s Supper is of central importance (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Why do so many people who claim to reverence
Christ neglect to observe the Lord’s Supper after the manner of the early
church, and at the same time establish all sorts of commemorations of which
Christ said nothing?
