Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: “Sir, Can I know that I am saved, and how can I know for
certain?”
Answer: The most succinct response to your inquiry is to
consider 1 John 5:13 and Romans 8:16: “I write these things to you who believe
in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal
life....it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are
children of God...” These two passages
indicate 1) that the inspired written revelation of the Holy
Spirit provides testimony concerning what one must do to be saved; 2) the human
spirit can be aware of whether one has complied with what the Holy Spirit has
revealed about being saved. It is important to recognize that salvation
has a historical and a continuous significance.
One is saved from past sins and enters Christ upon obedience to the
gospel of Christ (Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:26, 27, et. al.). As one maintains fellowship with Christ by
walking after the Spirit, one continues to know salvation (Romans 8:1-4; 1 John
1:5-2:2, et. al.). Beware of the
pernicious and unscriptural teaching “once saved always saved!”
