Think on These
Things
by Tom McLemore
Question: Mr. McLemore, Recently, one of my friends let it be
known that she is gay. How should I
respond to this news?
Answer:
Many today are
having to face the question with which you are grappling. It is essential that we express genuine love
(active goodwill) to folks like your friend.
It is also essential that we not compromise the truth regarding the
sinfulness of homosexual relations. Even
if one’s environment or heredity could be proved to account for a person’s
feeling attracted to the same sex, such would not justify homosexual
behavior. This is the crucial idea that
must be effectively communicated to those who view homosexual behavior as
morally acceptable. If anything people
felt the urge to do were thereby justified, there would be no sinful
behavior. I would patiently, lovingly,
and respectfully plead with your friend to determine what is
right behavior by the facts of God’s word, rather than by feelings. Meanwhile, I would offer reassurances of
love, support, and prayer.
