Think on These

Things

by Tom McLemore

Question: “Sir, I am very concerned about our present economic situation.  What does the Bible say that might help to ease my mind?”

Answer: The Bible urges two basic things (and these apply at all times, but especially during difficult times).  One is faith or trust in the Lord’s provision for his people.  Jesus teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and “all these things” (food and clothing and whatever else we need) will be ours (Matthew 6:33; cf. 1 Timothy 6:17).  The other thing is contentment with what we have (1 Timothy 6:8 and Hebrews 13:5). It is vital to distinguish between luxury and necessity.  Though our physical needs are important, our spiritual needs, which are fulfilled in our relationships with God and others, transcend our physical needs.  Life does not consist in the abundance of the things we possess (Luke 12:15).  We may pray that conditions will improve.  However, we may also learn to be thankful for what we have and to take a good, hard look at what really matters most in life.
