Think on These

Things

Question: “Mr. McLemore, How does a person become a born again Christian?”

Answer: Permit me to point out that this question contains two ways of saying the same thing, according to the New Testament.  One becomes a Christian by being begotten again or born again.  In the process of being born again, one becomes a Christian.  (Please read John 1:12, 13; 3:1-8; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:3, 23).  To be a Christian is to be a child of God.  One becomes a child of God by being begotten or born of God.  Jesus, in John 3:3, 5 taught that to be born again (or from above–the word contains both ideas) is to be born of water and the Spirit.  This refers to baptism of one who believes the Spirit’s testimony concerning Jesus, as the context of John 1-4 shows.  The whole process results in a new person.  Paul’s way of describing this is a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 2:8-10).  Baptism is the washing of regeneration (Titus 3:3-5).  Every Christian has been born again, and no one can be born again and not be a Christian.
