Question: Brother Tom, Do you have any advice about
New Year's resolutions?
Answer:
The major thing we need to help us fulfill our
resolutions is accountability. Perhaps
one reason we fail to make good on our resolutions is that we resolve things
that we want to accomplish, and we only have to answer to ourselves if we fail
to keep them. Under this approach, only
those with sufficient will power and desire can accomplish what they
resolve. Permit me to suggest an
alternative. Why not let God and Christ
choose our resolutions for us? By that I
mean, let us consider, in light of the teaching of Scripture, what God and
Christ would have us to accomplish, and let us resolve to do that. Then, let us seriously consider ourselves
accountable to God and Christ for fulfilling our resolves. Along with that, we might have a trusted
fellow Christian with whom we could share our resolves, and we can encourage
them to call us to account for our progress.
